My “little” brother; and a vacation

My little brother isn’t really little anymore.  I’ve never been considered a short woman, and in fact am usually taller than my friends, but I am dwarfed by my “little” brother, all 6-foot-something of him!  He is now an adult and I just can’t believe how time has flown.  I’ve been trying to arrange a session with Tyler for months now, and was excited to finally be able to get time with him.  He just exudes personality and I knew we would have a great session!  We rushed out after an amazing Thanksgiving dinner to try to catch the last light of the day and I just loved how these turned out.

On a business note –

Tomorrow I’m off for my much-needed vacation to Seattle! I will be back on Monday and will be checking emails occasionally while gone, but for the most part, I will be trying to leave everything behind and just enjoy the crisp Pacific Northwest air, a warm Starbucks mocha, and the company of great friends. I attended two high schools while living in Washington many years ago, and I’m blessed to have kept friendships from my time at both. I’ll be meeting up with old friends and even some new. While I’m there, I’ll be spending a day and shooting with the talented Michelle Moore and the dynamic duo behind MindCastle, Danielle and Casey. I met Danielle online almost 6 months ago and she is incredibly talented and supportive. I’m really looking forward to this trip and I’m planning on taking lots of pictures!

Have a great weekend everyone, I’ll be back refreshed and ready to post Monday!

Tis the season…

To be completely swamped!  Wow – what a crazy month it’s been!

All year long, I had been gearing up for my first Christmas season in business and had anticipated a certain number of print re-orders and cards, but can I just say holy moly?!  My anticipated rush was no where near my actual orders and I just have to say that you guys are amazing!  I’m so excited to be working with many of you on your cards and am really excited to see some of the creative, and artistic visions you and I have collaborated on!  I’m also so excited to see many of you venturing outside your comfort zone and ordering larger – and more dramatic sizes which gives such an impact when showcasing your beautiful portraits!  I even have a few of you giddy over your new canvases (that you swore you wouldn’t like)!!  hahaha…. see, I told you!!   As soon as they have all been given to their gift recepients, I’ll be sure to blog a few pics of them - the canvases chosen have been fantastic!

So, I just wanted to take a quick moment to thank all of my clients for your patience and support during this busy season.  As you can tell, I’m about 9 client blogs behind, and while my kids are cute, I’m sure you’ve seen enough of them for awhile!  Bear with me, as soon as I get these last few orders finalized, I’ll start blogging away on my new blog…

Thank you again, for making this an incredible first year of business!  I’m so blessed to have worked with each of you!

A tripod and a 6 year old

Playing around with my new tripod and lighting system in anticipation of an upcoming shoot, Nyah decided she wanted to take some pictures too.  We had a lot of fuzzy pics that are on the “editing floor”, but I was blown away that she captured these two!  I think my position for an assistant has been filled!

So much to be thankful for

Thursday, November 22, 2007 at 11:22 am | In Personal | 1 Comment

Normally, Thanksgiving in my house means one thing: Cowboys football!  Us, non-interested football fans cook and visit, I usually take pictures and then we have a HORSE tournament at the nearest basketball court (and I have no qualms bragging that I’m the running champion)    Today will be no different, and I have my tennis shoes ready to go.  Except, today IS a little bit different, and today I have so much to be thankful for!

It was ten years ago today that I slaved away in my teeny college apartment kitchen.  I had pulled together all the money that I had and spent well more than my allotted $70/month grocery allowance (putting me in debt for the month).  I read receipe books, called family cooks for help and planned down to the plates so that I could impress my “special friend” who, just hours before, stepped off a plane from a 4 month tour of duty in Saudi Arabia.  Tired and extremely jet-lagged,  Scott showed up at my doorstep where I welcomed him with open arms.  Proud of the feast I had prepared, he took a look, sat down on the couch and started to doze off!!  I was so mad I couldn’t stand it!  Didn’t he know what I had just been through??!  Didn’t he know I was now broke!  Didn’t he know that I was trying to tell him that I liked him?

That day, 10 years ago, when Scott first walked through my apartment door was the first day of the rest of our lives together.  We’ve been together ever since and today we celebrate our 10th year anniversary together.  I’m as thankful today for the life that we’ve had together as I’ve ever been thankful for anything else.  I pray for a future together as special and adventureous as the last 10 years.  Happy Anniversary Love, I love you!

The grass IS greener

Wednesday, November 14, 2007 at 12:37 pm | In Photography | 1 Comment

I know I’ve been slacking with my blog…. I guess you can say since I’ve seen the grass on the other side of this here pasture (samples of my new blog site), I’ve mentally divorced myself from this little patch of WordPress sod!  Don’t get me wrong, I love my blog – and I’ve got big plans for it.  It’s just that I’m lusting over something new – something better!  Call me fickle, call me unfaithful, but I’m trying to be patient while I wait for my new pretty home on the web!  (Okay – a little dramatic, but hey – I’m bored and Grey’s Anatomy doesn’t come on until tomorrow – so I have to entertain myself somehow!!  hee hee.)

So, while my blog is woefully neglected (for the time being only) - know that I’m editing away and have some fun weddings and Christmas cards to show you on my new sparkly blog……  so chant with me so that the talented and very popular Michael Nolan Jordan hears our blog prayers and pushes me up to the top of his client list: “Michael, Michael…….!”  (Just playing, Michael!!!)

Hahaha… okay, I think I’m done amusing myself for the time being!!  Have a fabulous Wednesday and check back often – new pics to post, new things to see!

Fotofusion

As photographers, we are bombarded with choices for new products to make our business lives easier and more productive. I’m sent information from companies on a daily basis asking me to check out their program, or try their company. Only a few have wowed me, as I prefer a simplistic approach, and I prefer working with my clients hands-on, but I have to say, one software program this week has actually made me giddy! Based on a referral from a fellow photographer, I tried the sample version of Fotofusion professional – and WOW! I can’t say enough to promote it!

The program (among many other things) allows you to customize your client emails. Since I do all client proofing online, I wanted something personal that I could send to my clients – something that would excite them – to notify them that their proofs are ready to view. Sure, I can email or call, but this software has really let me use my creativity to impress and excite them, and I have had great feedback on my first few sample emails I’ve done.

I created this email collage for a client earlier this week, and the feedback was amazing.   This is what my client received when she opened up her email  – a collage of the photos from her event along with the details on the proofing/ordering process.  I’ve been really impressed with the program and after doing a few samples, was eager to buy my own license for it.  You can customize the email anyway you want, but definately a program you should take a look at!
